Yes, if you register your 360 immediately. Registering your 360 is one way to verify the time that you bought the 360. If you don’t register your 360 and it breaks, then you’re screwed.
I believe the Halo 3 edition came out late spring or early summer of 2007, so you have until late spring/early summer 2010 to get it fix for free if you don’t register your 360.

If you are worried, call Microsoft 18004MYXBOX right now and order the Microsoft Extended Warranty for $50. Just tell them you just bought it

Do not worry.
As you said you do not have your recipt anymore, so if your console gets 3 Red Lights even within the first 30 days you just cannot give it back to the store where you bought it from.
What you should do now is to call Microsoft and tell them that you would like to register your console. they will ask for its serial number ( written on the back of the console itself ), your name, address , contact number and your email address.
Once it is registered, then you are set. If anytime it gets the RROD ( red ring of death ), they will send a UPS guy to pick it up and it will get fixed for free.
Just to let you know, when someone calls Microsoft to reposrt a broken console, they do not ask for the recipt. All they do, it to check in their system to see if the console is registered.
So, by loosing your recipt, all you have lost is the opportunity of returing your console to the shop where you it from and nothing more.
Good luck
