How do I repair the E74 error in my xbox 360?
Posted on March 7th, 2010 4 commentsMatt S asked:
Okay, months ago I started getting the two rings, which meant that it was overheating. Instead of paying the 100 dollars that microsoft wanted to fix it, I decided to open my 360 up and put another fan in. This worked great until I got the two rings again and again for a week, and then I got the E74 error. I now am sitting here with an xbox 360 motherboard in my lap, confused. Could ANYONE please tell me how to fix it?

this is really easy DO STEP BY STEP turn off and take everything off of your xbox (network adapter, hard drive, memory cards) but leave only the two cords in. turn it on and take out the AV cord, leave the power cord in, make sure the xbox is still on. now get 3 towels. lay down a towel, and put your xbox down sideways in the middles of the towel. wrap the towel around the xbox nice and snug then take the other two and wrap them around in the same way so you have an xbox in a towel in a towel in a towel. leave it on like that for about 15 minutes and you will hear the fan stop. this means your system has officially over heated. take the xbox out, keep it on. now instead of it haveing one flashing red light, it will have two. lay it down off of the towel or where you had it before, plug everything back in while it is still on (AV, THEN hard drive). turn off your xbox then turn it back on and good as new. E74 is gone. i know this looks complicated but its actually really easy its just alot of words!

1st get motherboard of the 360 out then look at the xclamp
2nd remove it so you can take off the small heatsink
3rd clean the compound of the gpu Nail polish remover and cotton bud could do a clean gpu is mirrior finish
4th re apply some compound (i like to put a dot on and smear it around with a card any compound works but i use OCZ Freeze)
5th re apply the heatsink now except with one less pair of washers for closer connection
6th put it back in the bottom part of the case Bake xbox360 on purpose to loosen the solder joints so they can realign
7th After good and overheated turn it off and leave off for 20 or 30min to cool put the cd drive back it
8th turn on and most lickly not see the rings i give a 95% this will work some xboxs have other issues that make this actually not do anything but usually work
9th see it works seal it up put the motherboard back before turning on
