The Xbox 360 3 red light error is the generic name for a whole range of problems which have affected millions of Xbox 360 consoles to date. The early models were badly designed and were prone to failure, mainly due to overheating. Recently, Microsoft have changed the design and many of the problems have disappeared although not entirely. There are a number of errors which can cause the Xbox 360 red light error to manifest itself, as well as causing your console to freeze and the dreaded Xbox 360 e74 error. I, myself have suffered from the Xbox 360 3 red light error, but rather than have to buy a new console, or spend a load of cash getting it fixed, i did it myself. Here is what you should do.
The Xbox 360 e74 error, and hence the Xbox 360 3 red light error is caused by the console overheating. Poor design and an inadequate passive cooling system causes heat to build up quickly inside the case, especially when the console is running flat out with high spec graphics. This heat can damage a number of different components such as the graphics processor (GPU) , motherboard, hard drive and disk drive. In order to fix the Xbox 360 3 red light error you need to address this overheating problem and repair the damage it has caused. Sounds difficult, but in reality its pretty straightforward.
First off, I need to stress that if your Xbox 360 is still under warranty then the Xbox 360 3 red light error can be simply fixed by sending it back to Microsoft for repair. If its under warranty then this is free. However, you will have to wait around 2-4 weeks to get your machine back. I certainly didn’t want to wait that long.
Ok, so you don’t want to wait, but what next? Well, simply put, the best way to fix the Xbox 360 3 red light error is to do it yourself. All you need are some simple tools such as a screwdriver set, a flat bench, and, of course, an Xbox 360 e74 repair guide. There are several very good repair guides available to download for immediate access and these all include detailed instructions using written text and high quality videos to show you how to disassemble your Xbox 360, repair the cause of the problem, re-assemble it then test that everything is working correctly again.
