Xbox 360 overheats quickly, just fixed RROD with heat gun trick?
Posted on August 8th, 2010 1 commentuhyea asked:
My xbox got the E74 error a couple weeks back so I took it apart, heat gunned it, put it back together (not the best idea but I avoided most of the screws for the moment, maybe the reason?) and it worked. I used the thermal heat sink compound from Radio Shack on the heatsinks above the CPU and the GPU and also used this paste to put metal washers on the RAM chips. The problem is no longer the E74 error. After playing COD MW2 for about 3 to 4 minutes (actual gameplay), the system overheats, shuts down, and flashes the 2 red lights signaling overheating. Letting it cool down for awhile lets it boot back up. The fan runs louder than it ever has from startup, if thats any help.
Why is it doing this? Is it the paste I used? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.
Also, the Xbox doesn’t feel too hot when it shuts down.
Thanks, but I’m pretty sure I didn’t damage anything on the motherboard, i only used the heat gun for 4 minutes total and never stayed in one place and used it on the lowest setting. I know there’s nothing blocking the internal fans and the system is in a well ventilated place. Im beginning to think its the paste between the heatsinks and the gpu or cpu. Any ideas?
Ok, popped it open directly after it shut down due to overheating and the heatsinks are both very hot to the touch. Significance?
Its the Radio Shack silicon based heat sink compound. Its the white tube with the red on it. Ive messed with the screws on the heatsinks and it seems like the tighter they are, the longer it doesnt overheat. But eventually it still does. The fan started slow that time, then sped up until it shut down.
I tweaked the screws on the heatsink a bit and put new paste between the heatsinks and the gpu and cpu. it doesn’t seem to overheat anymore. But now the picture screws up, the colors shift and it gets blurry. I reboot and it is fine. Please someone offer some kind of advice this is driving me crazy. Well, when you modded it, do you know if any of the things you placed was anywhere directly across from, or behind the internal fans? This may prevent the Xbox the ability to releive it from warm air, and engulf fresher, purer, colder air.
But to make sure your Xbox doesn’t overheat:
1. If it’s a colder day, keep the windows open.
2. Put a small fan next to your Xbox.
3. Turn on your ceiling fan.
4. Never put the Xbox on the carpet, as it attracts dust and debris into the fans. Clean the fans just by blowing on them every time you began to play.
5. NEVER BUY AN INTERNAL FAN! The internal fans actually cause your system to use more energy, therefore output even more heat! Also, make sure any of your work didn’t damage the sodding to the motherboard. As this is a serious problem, and in order to fix it properly, send it into Microsoft, or buy the parts and fix it yourself by resodding it.
If you need more detail or examples on how to prevent your xbox from overheating, don’t hesitate to ask.

I think that you’re right. What kind of paste did you use? And did you apply it anywhere else? Besides between the heatsinks, gpu, or cpu. Normally, most type of pastes will heat up when presented with ‘heat’. The heat from your Xbox could be stimulating the paste, therefore increases the level of heat in your Xbox. This is just a theory, but yeah, what kind of paste did you use?
________________That paste should have been fine. But paste, at least the kind I’ve used to mod mine (and other equiptment), is extremely hard to get off, and by taking it off, usually it will destroy whatever part you’ve placed it on. It could have been the paste job, did you get paste anywhere else? Even a drop could stimulate the results you are having. Your warrenty on your Xbox is now voided, because you’ve tampered with it. But you can still pay 100 dollars to have them deal with it. They will probably send you a refurbished one. Be wary, refurbished Xbox’s come with a 1 year warrenty, but most of them suck. Mine broke like 2 weeks after the 1 year warrenty was done with. But try the methods I told you to reduce overheating, mainly keep a small fan running next to it will greatly help. It might not be enough in your case.
